The Community Update is provided to inform residents of the surrounding community about construction projects on campus and near the perimeter of campus. November, 2009
1. BRYANT BANNISTER TREE-RING BUILDING
Description: The Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research (LTRR) has been housed in the West Stadium for more than 70 years, with minimal improvements to their facilities. This project will provide new laboratories and offices to house the LTRR's diverse array of research programs, as well as public outreach and support spaces. The project is the first phase of a long-term effort to relocate the entire LTRR into contemporary facilities.
Status: Facility programming, master planning, conceptual design, and cost modeling activities for the new laboratory and office facility are underway concurrently.
Construction Dates: August 2010 - December 2011

2. ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES PHASE 2
Description: This addition on the east side of the existing Dennis DeConcini Environment and Natural Resources Building will further interdisciplinary research in earth, environmental, natural resources, atmospheric, mathematical, and related sciences.
Status: The project is on hold pending resolution of funding issues.
Construction Dates: January 2011 - June 2012

3. HAZARDOUS WASTE FACILITIES
Description: Risk Management & Safety processes chemical waste generated by campus lab activities in a facility that has inadequate capacity, security and temperature control for its staff. The two new structures will provide fully enclosed space on the site of the existing facility, and will include segregated areas for waste container processing, analytical testing, storage for shipment, supply storage, and office support space.
Status: The construction phase is running behind schedule due to major electrical revisions. The Hazardous Waste Administration Building No.1 is nearly completed. The Hazardous Waste Operations Building No. 2 is nearly completed. Civil work is completed. The fire alarm / alert notifications systems are nearing completion.
Construction Dates: October 2008 - November 2009

4. SIXTH STREET RESIDENCE HALLS
Description: This project will provide new on-campus housing for 1,088 undergraduate students. The buildings are being constructed on two sites along 6th Street; one at Tyndall Avenue, and one at Highland Avenue. These new residence halls will be organized into learning communities to promote academic success and self-development. Four to six story buildings of brick, metal and stucco, are designed around interior courtyards to create secure private space for student circulation and gathering.
Status: Tyndall site: Second floors decks for Buildings D and E are complete. Stem walls for Building C are in progress Highland Site: The utility tunnel is 90% complete. The backfill of the tunnel is about 75% complete.
Construction Dates: May 2009 - March 2011

5. SOLAR ENERGY INITIATIVES
Description: A solar energy initiative is underway that is being facilitated through the University's partnership with APS Energy Services to advance solar technology awareness on campus and throughout the community. Through this initiative solar installations are planned for Second Street Garage, Student Recreation Center, McClelland Hall, McClelland Park, and Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
Status: Construction is in progress at Second Street Garage, the steel support structure has been erected and the PV array has been installed. Designs are in progress for photovoltaic and solar thermal installations for the other solar initiative sites outlined above.
Construction Dates: July 2009 - December 2009

6. STUDENT RECREATION CENTER EXPANSION
Description: Expansion of the Student Recreation Center will provide additional fitness facilities for weight training and cardio equipment; additional gymnasium/court facilities in the form of a Multipurpose Athletic Court (MAC) for expanded sport/recreation program offerings; space for Outdoor Adventures, which offers student, faculty and staff outdoor recreational trips; and much needed landscaped outdoor space for casual recreation activities for the Department of Campus Recreation.
Status: Project is 95% complete. MAC and OA buildings are complete. Fitness building in final stages of completion and the Mondo flooring is currently being installed. Exterior sitework and landscaping is underway.
Construction Dates: May 2008 - November 2009

7. UMC DIAMOND CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER
Description: The new 200,000 sq. ft., six-story facility is being built directly north of and connected to the existing University Medical Center hospital. The project includes a new emergency department and trauma center on the first floor (with new roof-top heliport), two floors of medical/surgical and ICU beds, pediatrics inpatient units on the upper three floors, and a new "Diamond Children's Lobby" in the vacated emergency department space.
Status: The new emergency department and helipad is now open and Warren Avenue is temporarily open for emergency vehicles and pedestrians only. Work has started on the Diamond Lobby. The remaining floors open later in 2009 and in 2010. UMC Contact: Steve Brigham 694-4225 or sbrigham@umcaz.edu.

8. UMC PARKING GARAGE
Description: A new, six-level, 1,000 space parking structure is being designed in the northwest corner of the AHSC campus for UMC staff parking. UMC Contact: Steve Brigham 694-4225 or sbrigham@umcaz.edu .
