Community Update

The Community Update is provided to inform residents of the surrounding community about construction projects on campus and near the perimeter of campus. July 2009

1. BRYANT BANNISTER TREE-RING BUILDING
Description: The Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research (LTRR) has been housed in the West Stadium for more than 70 years, with minimal improvements to their facilities. This project will provide new laboratories and offices to house the LTRR's diverse array of research programs, as well as public outreach and support spaces. The project is the first phase of a long-term effort to relocate the entire LTRR into contemporary facilities.

Status: Facility programming for the new laboratory and office facility is underway.

Construction Dates: July 2010 to June 2011

2. ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES PHASE 2
Description: This addition on the east side of the existing Dennis DeConcini Environment and Natural Resources Building will further interdisciplinary research in earth, environmental, natural resources, atmospheric, mathematical, and related sciences.

Status: Negotiations with the Architect and the Construction Manager at Risk, for scopes of services, fees, and strategies for fast-track construction with phased bid packages, are nearly complete. Fee proposals for surveying and geotechnical engineering have been received. The University is reviewing project options prior to authorizing contracting for services.

Construction Dates: October 2009 to June 2011

3. HAZARDOUS WASTE FACILITY ENCLOSURE
Description: Risk Management & Safety processes chemical waste generated by campus lab activities in a facility that has inadequate capacity, security and temperature control for its staff. The two new structures will provide fully enclosed space on the site of the existing facility, and will include segregated areas for waste container processing, analytical testing, storage for shipment, supply storage, and office support space.

Status: Construction phase is currently on schedule but may be impacted by major electrical revisions. The Hazardous Waste Administration Building No.1 is nearing completion. The Hazardous Waste Operations Building No. 2 is 60% complete with roofing, mechanical, electrical and finish work in progress. Civil work will start shortly.

Construction Dates: October 2008 to August 2009

4. SIXTH STREET RESIDENCE HALLS
Description: Addition of new residence halls at two separate sites for a total of 1,088 undergraduate student beds. The Highland (Building #131) and Tyndall (Building #132) Residence Halls will be organized into learning communities to promote academic success and self-development, and improve recruitment and retention of students. Buildings are four to six stories in height, and are designed around interior courtyards.

Status: Tyndall site: Site sewers are nearly complete. The excavation for the connecting tunnel and basement is complete. Footings for Building D are poured.

Construction Dates: May 2009 to March 2011

5. STUDENT RECREATION CENTER EXPANSION
Description: Expansion of the Student Recreation Center will provide additional fitness facilities for weight training and cardio equipment; additional gymnasium/court facilities in the form of a Multipurpose Athletic Court (MAC) for expanded sport/recreation program offerings; space for Outdoor Adventures, which offers student, faculty and staff outdoor recreational trips; and much needed landscaped outdoor space for casual recreation activities for the Department of Campus Recreation.

Status: Overall project is 73% complete. MAC and OA buildings dried in and HVAC systems operational. Interior rough in work almost complete in Fitness Building and curtain wall will soon start. Utility piping inside the new tunnel, under the stadium and in the new basement tested and ready for service.

Construction Dates: May 2008 to November 2009

6. UMC DIAMOND CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER
Description: The new 200,000 sq. ft., six-story facility is being built directly north of and connected to the existing University Medical Center hospital. The project includes a new emergency department and trauma center on the first floor, two floors of medical/surgical and ICU beds, and pediatrics inpatient units on the upper three floors. A new heliport will be built on the roof of the new facility

Status: All temporary facilities and the relocated emergency generator plant are completed and the main facility is under construction. Warren & Cherry avenues continue to be closed to traffic. Emergency, delivery and staff access is maintained. Scheduled completion of the new emergency department and helipad is June 16, 2009 with the remaining floors opening later in 2009 and in 2010. 7. UMC PARKING GARAGE
Description: A new, six-level, 1,000 space parking structure is being designed in the northwest corner of the AHSC campus for UMC staff parking. UMC Contact: Steve Brigham 694-4225 or sbrigham@umcaz.edu .
